Chalon-sur-Saône ist eine Stadt in der französischen Region Burgund. Sie ist mit 52.260 Einwohnern (1999) zwar die größte Stadt des Départements Saône-et-Loire, aber nicht deren Verwaltungssitz, sondern lediglich Sitz einer Unterpräfektur. Nach Dijon ist Chalon die zweitgrößte Stadt der Region Burgund. Die Stadt liegt am Ufer der Saône und am Endpunkt des Canal du Centre und ist der Markt und mit seinem Flusshafen auch die Verladestation der westlichen Bresse für das Getreide und die regionalen Weine (siehe hierzu auch den Artikel Burgund (Weinbaugebiet)), die den Fluss hinunter transportiert werden sollten.
Die Kathedrale St. Vincent an der Place Saint-Vincent, deren Hauptteil aus dem 12. bis 15. Jahrhundert stammt, weist – neben der neoklassizistischen Fassade aus dem 19. Jahrhundert – architektonische Elemente auf, die ins 8. Jahrhundert zurückreichen. Die Altstadt rund um die Kathedrale ist teilweise gut erhalten. Gegenüber der Kirche St. Pierre aus dem 18. und 19. Jahrhundert liegt das Musée Vivant-Denon, in dem neben einer Gemäldesammlung römische und merowinginsche Funde ausgestellt sind. Auf einer Insel in der Saône steht die Tour du Doyenné aus dem 15. Jahrhundert sowie das im 16. Jahrhundert gegründete Hôpital einschließlich einer Kapelle mit den ursprünglichen Glasfenstern und einer Apotheke.
